Why I Got a Samsung Galaxy S III and Not an iPhone 5
People always ask me for my opinion when it comes to new tech, especially new iPhones since I’ve been an Android user for almost 2 years now. A lot of my friends think iPhones are the only way to go, which obviously is not the case, but for most it probably is a very good choice.
I like iPhones. They are super easy to use, and they have the best looking hardware of any phone out there. In fact I had an iPhone 3G and I liked it a lot, it just ended up not being for me. I like to tinker and customize things. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can customize on an iPhone, especially back then with iOS 3. Sure you can jailbreak it, but that rendered my phone pretty unstable, and it still doesn’t open your phone to “endless possibilities,” so it wasn’t worth it for me. I also wasn’t happy when Apple was trying to pass off things like MMS messaging and landscape orientation keyboard input as “new updated features.” Why couldn’t you just put that in the phone in the first place? Because people ate it up, that’s why. REVOLUTIONARY, they said. I’m sorry, but my Nokia 3310 (you had one of these) could send picture messages in the year 2000. But this is all in the past.
What made Apple so “revolutionary” is that it made smartphones simple, and easy to use for the every-man. That’s what makes iPhones so great. They allow regular people to have the entire internet in their pants wherever they are.
However, I am not the every-man.
I need to tinker. I need to explore. I do not like when people tell me how I have to do something. I want options. I need an Android phone.
When Google comes out with an update, EVERYBODY get’s the update, along with all of its features. Don’t want the update? Don’t get it. Want SOME of the update, but not the whole thing? Go online and find a developer who feels the same way, and he’ll be more than happy to send you HIS version of the update. Want the update early? Go online and get it. You can’t do this with Apple (I mean, I’m sure it could be argued that you CAN, but it is much simpler to do on an Android phone).
When Apple released its 4.0 update, it rendered my iPhone 3G totally useless. I had to restore my phone back to iOS 3.0 just so I can send texts without it freezing. This also, pissed me off. It seemed as though they nerfed my phone so I would want to buy a newer one.
iPhones feel oppressive. I should be able to make my phone do whatever I want. To put it simply, it is a lot easier to do simple things on an iPhone than it is an Android phone, but it is a lot easier to do complex things on an Android phone. I think it also makes me angry how people over do this whole iPhone being revolutionary thing. Just because Apple did it, doesn’t make it revolutionary. Remember the Apple Cube? Exactly.
If you’re thinking about switching to Android, do some research first. You really have to know how the operating system works. It’s a living, breathing environment that requires a lot of upkeep. Because of this, it is not for everybody.
Long story short, if you want a feature packed powerhouse that you need to tinker with, get an Android phone. If you want to be left alone, and want to upgrade your phone every September, get an iPhone.
